What Are Force Plates and Why Does Your Knee Care?

What Is a Force Plate and How Does It Work?

Every time you jump, run, or change direction, you push against the ground. The ground pushes back with an equal force known as ground reaction force.

A force plate records that interaction.

The system measures how much force you create and how that force changes over fractions of a second. When you stand on two plates, each plate records one leg separately. That lets your physical therapist see how the work is divided between your recovering leg and your other leg.

Force plates can be used during several movements, including:

  • Double-leg and single-leg jumps
  • Countermovement jumps
  • Drop jumps
  • Squats
  • Isometric strength tests
  • Landing and repeated-jump tests

The plates don’t take an image of your knee. They can’t show whether an ACL graft has healed or diagnose the source of your pain.

They show what your body does when it has to create or control force. That information becomes useful when a physical therapist interprets it alongside your strength, symptoms, movement quality, confidence, and sport demands.

Why Do Physical Therapists Use Force Plates for Knee Rehab?

Physical therapists use force plates because pain and time don’t tell the full story.

Your knee may stop hurting before it regains athletic capacity. Your swelling may disappear while strength deficits remain. You may also complete a jump successfully by shifting more work to your other leg.

That compensation can be hard to see.

A jump may look smooth in real time. The athlete may reach a respectable height. Yet the recovering leg may contribute less force during takeoff or absorb less force during landing.

Research shows this can still happen when athletes reach the return-to-sport stage after ACL reconstruction. In a 2023 study, athletes continued to favour the uninvolved leg during several vertical jump tests. Researchers found differences in takeoff impulse, landing force, and overall jump performance.

One study of male athletes found that they reached an average of 97% symmetry in hop distance. However, the reconstructed knee produced only 69% of the work performed by the other knee during takeoff. The athletes travelled a similar distance, but they didn’t get there using the same strategy. That matters when your sport demands repeated jumping, cutting, and landing.

A club soccer player may have a showcase approaching. A volleyball athlete may want to return before qualifier season. A lacrosse player may be trying to protect a recruiting window.

Those dates create real pressure for Tri-Valley athletes and their families. They don’t create readiness.

Force-plate testing helps replace reassurance with something you can measure.

What Does a Force Plate Measure About Your Knee?

Force plates produce a large amount of data. You don’t need to understand every number on the report. You need to understand what the numbers say about your ability to create force, absorb force, and use both legs.

What Force Plates Can’t Tell You Alone

Force plates provide objective data, but they don’t replace a full knee assessment.

They can’t tell you:

  • Whether your graft has fully healed
  • Why your knee hurts
  • Whether you feel confident returning to contact
  • How your knee moves during every possible cutting task
  • Whether you can tolerate an entire practice or game
  • Whether you’re psychologically ready to compete

Force-plate data can still create false confidence when one result is viewed in isolation. A systematic review of single-leg hop testing found that athletes may achieve a good hop distance while still using less knee flexion and producing lower knee moments during landing.

Research involving adolescent athletes found a similar problem. Hop distances appeared symmetrical, but the reconstructed leg still absorbed less energy at the knee.

Limb symmetry scores can also overestimate recovery. If the uninvolved leg loses strength during rehab, both legs may produce similar numbers while remaining underprepared for sport. Two equally weak legs can still create a reassuring symmetry score.

That’s why force plates should support a broader return-to-sport assessment, not become a one-number clearance test.

What Do Your Force-Plate Numbers Mean for You?

Raw force-plate data can include dozens of measurements. Most athletes and parents don’t need a spreadsheet filled with unexplained numbers.

You need to know three things:

  1. What are you doing well?
  2. What is your body still avoiding?
  3. What should you train next?

Imagine that your jump height looks strong, but your recovering leg produces less takeoff force. The result looks good, yet the strategy remains uneven.

Your next training block may need more single-leg strength, power, and intent on the recovering side.

Now imagine that both legs contribute evenly, but your total output remains low. Your symmetry looks good, but you still lack the force required for competitive sport.

You may need to build more overall strength and power before returning.

A third athlete may produce force well during takeoff but avoid the recovering leg during landing. That athlete has rebuilt power faster than deceleration capacity.

The next phase should focus on force absorption, landing control, and change-of-direction work.

How the BPR Comeback Score Makes the Data Useful

The Comeback Score brings the important pieces together so you can see what your knee can handle now.

It considers more than whether the left and right legs match. Force production, force absorption, symmetry, and overall performance all help create a clearer picture of your recovery.

The goal isn’t to chase one perfect number.

The score should help answer what your knee needs before you can get back with confidence.

It also gives you something concrete to track. You can test, train the missing qualities, and test again. That creates a progression based on your response rather than a generic calendar.

A useful score should change the plan. Otherwise, it’s just a number on a screen.

Can Force Plates Tell You When You’re Ready to Return to Sport?

Force plates can support a return-to-sport decision. They can’t make that decision alone.

International ACL experts recommend a criteria-based progression rather than clearance based only on time since surgery. The Panther Symposium consensus states that purely time-based return-to-sport decisions should be abandoned. It recommends objective physical testing, functional assessment, psychological readiness, and consideration of the athlete’s full context.

The Aspetar clinical practice guideline for ACL rehabilitation takes a similar approach. Its proposed return-to-sport criteria include knee symptoms, range of motion, stability, strength, psychological readiness, jump performance, impulse, running mechanics, and sport-specific training.

That’s why we check:

  • Pain and swelling
  • Knee range of motion
  • Knee stability
  • Quadriceps and hamstring strength
  • Force production and absorption
  • Jump and landing performance
  • Running, cutting, and deceleration
  • Sport-specific conditioning
  • Confidence and fear of re-injury

Your tests should also match your sport.

A soccer midfielder needs to repeat high-speed running, decelerations, cuts, and reactive movements. A volleyball player needs repeated jumping and landing capacity. A lacrosse athlete must handle contact, rotation, acceleration, and unpredictable direction changes.

Being nine months out doesn’t automatically prepare you for an ECNL showcase, varsity volleyball match, or full-speed lacrosse practice.

Time matters because healing takes time. Your performance still needs to earn the next step.

What Should You Look for in a PT Who Uses Force Plates?

Owning force plates doesn’t automatically make a clinic performance-based. The value comes from knowing what to test, how to interpret it, and what to do next.

Ask whether your physical therapist:

  • Measures each leg separately
  • Assesses force production and absorption
  • Looks beyond a single symmetry percentage
  • Compares your results with the demands of your sport
  • Explains the data in language you understand
  • Uses the results to change your program
  • Retests you after a targeted training phase
  • Combines force-plate data with strength and movement testing
  • Evaluates your confidence and psychological readiness

The technology should make your rehab more specific. It shouldn’t make the conversation more confusing.

You should leave testing knowing what improved, what still needs work, and what the next phase will address.
